Part travelogue, part journal, Raven is the account of a summer road trip to find the missing pieces of a fourteen year old boy’s lineage. It is written in Raven’s unusual style, with his need for dictionary definitions and his use of black and white photos and pen and ink sketches to fill in his narratives like adjectives.
Raven has a tendency to be very introverted, which makes him seem uncooperative. Because of this, he has been placed on the “autistic spectrum”, which he continually questions.
Raven is also a “half-breed”, with tribal loyalties divided between the southwestern Papagos of Arizona, the only landscape he can remember, and the far northern Ojibwe tribe, a place he longs to visit, but only knows through the descriptions in Longfellow’s epic poem Hiawatha.
Up until now, Raven has successfully avoided his actual history. But this summer, this will all change when he needs to complete an autobiography before entering High School in the fall. This project will make it necessary to leave the security of his reservation and travel cross-country to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. With his peculiarities, Raven finds the outside world a difficult place to exist, and knows he can’t make this “vision quest” on his own. Raven joins his beloved uncle Joe in what becomes much more than a school assignment. This new information will answer the questions surrounding his past and directly affect his future.
As Raven spends the summer in the land of his beloved Hiawatha, he is given valuable insights into the mysteries of his mother’s life and death and of the father who abandoned them both. He will learn the origin of his unusual name and will develop a love for a landscape so foreign to his own. All of these revelations will come through the stories his northern grandmother will tell, the woman he doesn’t remember, as she gave him up when he was two years old.
Raven’s story is a foreword to the lovely Northwood Prophecies’s, a book of essays and poems written by his mother, which helps him to, in his mother’s words, “hear your own voices”.
My it do the same for you…

The second book is called Northwoods Prophecies, it is a collection of poetry which gives a vivid, even stunning picture off that heritage.Lisbeth Lutz has found a unique and clever way to share her collection of poetry about the Northwoods with the world.
