When space freighter pilot Calen Macleef accidentally wins Larissa “Bit” Earnest in a lucky hand of poker, his main concern is what his gruff and uncompromising brother Jack will say about it. Jack Macleef is the captain of the ship in a world where space travel has only recently become the norm and space piracy abounds. Painful memories of prior abuse surface for Bit as she finds herself on a freighter full of rowdy, ungentlemanly merchant marines. Jack works to find a safe place for frightened Bit amongst the ungentlemanly crew, but good looks and innocent ways continually charm the men. With tension and danger running high, each begins to wonder will they survive the pirates... and each other?

Trust Treachery Echoes of Sol Book 1 eBook Charissa Dufour Reviews

I liked this quick read and think the author did a great job with the characters, especially Larissa, better known as Bit. The story is really based around Bit.She was a servant until she was won in a card game by Calen. As she is taken aboard a space ship where Calens' brother Jack is the captain, Lucky for Bit, in a ship full of men, most are willing to treat her with respect. This first book in the series has some action and fights as the team on the ship try to take animal embryos to Mars. I think the journey is going to get more interesting. Good job.
3.5 stars. Similar to the mercenary romance novels of Ruby Lionsdrake, but not as intense either in the action or the romance departments. The "treachery" part was not well developed at all, the character practically ignored until the end. But I disagree with another reviewer who thought the indentured employee plot belonged in the 18th century. There were 138 people in Houston arrested for human trafficking the day I started reading the book. It is quite relevant in the space age and even in the space city itself.
Bit is at the center of Trust and Treachery. She is an indentured servant who is won in a poker game. Her new home is a freighter crewed by a group of rowdy, ungentlemanly merchant marines. She has suffered abuse in the past and has to work hard to make a place for herself in this world of men. I loved her character. There is much more to her than meets the eye. In a trip filled with danger she manages to contribute to the fight with pirates. There is tension and danger as well as great scenes as Bit learns to interact with the crew. This is book one in the Echoes of Sol. It was free on and I liked it enough to buy the next book in the series. Free books do pay off.

Larissa is an indentured slave in the future when traveling to Mars from Earth is normal, but not for her kind. Through circumstance, she is turned over to a new owner and ends up on a freighter carrying important cargo into space with a crew of eighteen men.

In this rough environment of space merchant marines, she starts to become a woman because of the kindness and respect she receives from the captain, his brother, and many of the crew. This beginning of a romance situation is the background to an adventure Larissa never imagined being part of at the age of twenty-two.

There are attacks by pirates, confused personal relations, and Sci-Fi adventure that Ms. Dufour writes in an easy to read style - slow at times but gripping at others. Not being a Sci-Fi buff, I may join Bit's, Larissa’s nickname, heroic adventure in the future.

I have read another of Ms. Dufour’s books and will return for more.

I look forward to the next book. While this one finished after a major event was solved, it by no means finished the story leaving plenty of questions and even a bit of suspense yet I am not so distraught by the cliffhanger that I am on the edge of my seat. The story feels kind of like a prequel and I am waiting for the real conflict. Not that Bit's adjustment to "freedom" and kindness as well as the pirate threat isn't conflict but there's so much room for action and adventure that I have a feeling that will be coming in future books. The romance, while a big deal, was a second seat to Bit's adjustment although I think it will play a bigger role in the future. The character development was really where the focus was in this story. I look forward to the future of Bit, Blaine, Oden, Jack, Calen and the rest of the crew.
There are lots of parts I enjoyed and a few things that made the story less enjoyable. The writing made the reading difficult. But, wanting to know how the story turned out, made it easier to keep reading. Dufour builds sympathetic characters that smooth over some of the rough bits of the story. Doesn't hurt that I'm a fan of space trader like stories in the vein of Nathan Lowell's Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper series.
What I did worry about was the writing style. If the next books were like this, that might be a problem for me. Fortunately, the second book has sample chapters at the end of book 1. There was a clear progression in writing skill. I also took the time to look at book three and book five and saw continued growth in writing style. That makes it easier for me to plunk down money for the next in the series. (Unfortunately for me, this is a space romance, which isn't my favorite genre, but I like the characters.)
Great start to the series. I would describe this as a science fiction action with burgeoning romance, contingent on further character development. Bit's not about to pick one of the men she's found herself surrounded by and have her emotional scars and trust-issues "suddenly and miraculously" cured by love. I'm usually not into books in which the heroine is torn by her choices in men, but instead of it being all "love-triangly" (more like a pentagon), it's not about teasing or stringing the men or the reader along. She's not "stumped" because they're all so awesome and she's so attracted to all of them; she's figuring herself out first, learning to trust, and discovering her true worth, and the men who are interested in her are figuring her out, too. In addition to fighting space pirates and sabotage. This book is action heavy!
Fun and exciting sci-fi story! Best of its kind that I've been able to find in a long time, definitely worth a read.
