Richard Warren, aged ten, is growing up in the North Yorkshire village of Ledder Bridge. Through verdant fields and meandering brooks, life is simple and easy, far from the turmoil of the Cold War world. When an adventure with his older brother Peter Warren goes wrong and Richard finds himself trapped in the dark depths of an abandoned quarry, it kick-starts a chain of events that brings him into contact with work, family conflict, and the dreaded English class system. Will Richard be able to persevere and become wise well beyond his tender years?

I absolutely loved this book in the beginning. I loved the detail, the author's way of describing ordinary life, surroundings, etc. But I gradually became disappointed. There were times in the book I was confused; the boy's reasons for doing certain things just made no sense to me, didn't seem to be in keeping with the very realistic beginning. By the end, I was rather frustrated. Started out strong; ended weak.

1964 Made in Yorkshire Book 1 Made In Yorkshire Saga edition by James Farner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I suppose that calling a book "comfortable" is a bit odd? But the word suits. I started reading, and the characters were all realistic right from the start. I felt I understood the boy, the main character, immediately. His mannerisms and way of thinking were all quite natural, as well as the interplay with his older brother and his dad.

This is not an epic story with a message that will stay with you forget. It's not a page-Turner that you can't put down until 400 AM. But it is a poignant story about a boy growing up.
I got this as a free eBook. I have a policy that if a book is free, I will take it, no questions asked. Because BOOKS. Books are great. And sometimes I find an unexpected gem. That is exactly what this book is An unexpected gem. The story follows one boy who is in that awkward space between childhood and puberty. It chronicles his discovery that life isn't always what you thought it was, that sometimes your parents teach you best behavior and maybe don't always follow that themselves. I think this story is about learning about the shades of gray in life. Anyway. The story is told very well. It's well written. It's compelling. It's enjoyable. And in fact, I find myself now willing to purchase book #2.
Set in mid century Yorks hire about a blue color family and struggles they have enduring real life is not my typical read. It was a free book through unlimited and sounded like a good change. I am very glad I read it, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will continue with the series. It was very well written and edited without and discrepancies which I was very happy about. If your thinking you "might" like it then you will love it.
In a study of both world wars, it is easy to forget about the times following those years, especially to an American never having visited England in the 50's or 60's. I found it startling to read how out of touch was the small farming communities with the modern world of 1964, USA. The hero, a young boy who still sat in his father's lap, developed some insights that were surprisingly intelligent. Due to the poorness of his family, he had no formal schooling and no social interactions with peers. The reader could assume he would someday achieve levels denied to the rest of his family.
This was a free -ebook and it certainly did bear out the adage you get what you pay for. 1964 was the story of a young boy coming of age in Yorkshire. The title would make one believe it was in 1964. However, it felt as if this was a story of the 1920's era. This book was very Lassie, Timmy, and the well. Meh.
I tried and tried to stay awake with this one. I simply could not relate to a pre-adolescent boy with nothing going on in his life but an older brother who is always trying to get him into trouble, a mother who does housework all the time, and a father who is away from the house most the time with his farming chores. The boy gets a job in a pub, but the story continues to go nowhere. Sorry, I hung this one up and didn't want to waste the time finishing it.
I actually read this book in one sitting. It is the first in a series and introduce us to the main character, Richard and his family. Richard is a child and he and his older brother, Peter, live on a small farm with their parents. Sneaking off one day to go to the local quarry, something their parents forbid them to do, Richard falls down an abandoned mine shaft. Rescued by his father and his father's friend, Simon, it proves to be a life changing event. As punishment he is forced to work in Simon's pub, where he meets and befriends the local eccentric. This is a coming of age story of sorts though RIchard is only 12 when it ends. His life and, adventures will be continued in the other three books in the series. I am not sure I will continue the series, as there was something lacking in the character development that failed to hold my attention..
